What began as a privilege reserved for Europe’s gilded few has, over two centuries, become a defining ritual of modern life — a marker of aspiration, identity, and cultural curiosity.
Skopje, North Macedonia’s little‑known capital beneath the shadow of Vodno Mountain, is a study in contrasts — a city where ancient ambition, modern upheaval, and bold reinvention collide. Its centre dazzles with neoclassical spectacle, its past bears the scars of a devastating quake, and its spirit thrives in bazaars, bridges, and brutalism. Few capitals are as intriguing — or as revealing — to behold.
