Why JA Manafaru is the Maldives’ newest go-to wellness destination
JA Manafaru feels less like an island resort and more like a private world—where the ocean speaks in quiet luxury, time softens its edges, and every horizon reminds you that beauty is most powerful when it is effortless..”

Few destinations on earth carry quite the same promise of escape as the Maldives. Scattered across the Indian Ocean in a constellation of low-lying atolls, its islands have long been synonymous with a particular kind of restorative luxury — where turquoise shallows, soft white sand and an almost total absence of urban noise conspire to slow the mind before a single treatment has begun. There is something inherently healing about the place itself: the rhythm of the tide, the warmth of the light, the sensation of being genuinely removed from the pressures of ordinary life. It is perhaps no surprise that the Maldives has become one of the world’s most sought-after destinations for those in pursuit of genuine rest and renewal.
On the northernmost atoll in the Maldives archipelago, away from the popular routes of its more frequented atolls, JA Manafaru is quietly reshaping what a luxury wellness escape can look like. For 2026, the Forbes Travel Guide Recommended resort is introducing a new residency program at its Calm Spa Sanctuary that brings together world-renowned wellness practitioners, each grounded in deeply rooted, often ancient, therapeutic traditions.
This is not the typical spa offering of well-polished menus and predictable treatments. Instead, JA Manafaru’s approach leans into something more layered and intentional: a convergence of global healing systems, from Tibetan medicine and Ayurveda to osteopathy, Reiki and bodywork. The result is a philosophy of wellbeing that transcends the notion of a mere checklist of treatments, emerging instead as a living, continually evolving practice into which the guest is gracefully absorbed.
Set within the Haa Alifu Atoll (the Maldives’ northernmost and one of its least disturbed regions) the resort’s setting plays a central role in this philosophy. Reached via a seaplane journey from Malé, the island unfolds as a self-contained sanctuary, where banyan trees cast long shadows over the paths and villas open out onto views of uninterrupted ocean horizons. It’s a landscape that naturally encourages stillness and reflection, making it an apt backdrop for the kind of introspective, restorative work in which these practitioners specialise.
It’s not just an island; it’s a breakthrough.
Get ready to feel alive, inspired. Rejuvenated.
Throughout the year, a curated calendar of visiting experts brings fresh perspectives to the island. Earlier in the season, guests are invited to experience the work of Dr. Gurung Yeshi Gyatso, whose practice is rooted in Sowa Rigpa, the traditional Tibetan system of medicine. His treatments focus on restoring balance to the body’s “wind energy,” addressing stress, circulation and sleep through methods refined over centuries.
As the year progresses, the residency programme continues to evolve. From April through June, a succession of Ayurvedic specialists, including Kunnathuparambil Prathapan Vipinraj and Dr. Shreejit Ghadigaonkar, bring a focus on personalised diagnosis and systemic balance, tailoring treatments to each guest’s constitution and underlying health concerns.
In the summer months, the emphasis shifts towards holistic and compassionate care. Practitioners Patience Bekezela Ngwenya and Nkosinamandla Ndebele introduce therapies that bridge physical and emotional wellbeing, from Reiki and elderly massage to posture-focused alignment techniques designed to gently restore the body’s natural equilibrium. The season concludes in October with Dehlia Lapeyrie, founder of ŌMIRI Massage, whose work combines Thai massage, Sarga bodywork and myofascial release. Continued below…

Alongside him, Ayurvedic practitioner Ranjith Saj offers a more clinical, integrative approach, combining traditional principles with modern therapeutic techniques to support detoxification and muscular recovery. Meanwhile, Stefano Beconcini, whose background in physics informs his distinctive practice, addresses chronic pain through movement correction, blending Western rehabilitation with Thai bodywork to create lasting physical resilience.
Her treatments, both powerful and nuanced, aim to release deeply held tension while supporting long-term recovery. What unites these diverse modalities is a shared emphasis on individualisation. Each guest begins with a consultation, allowing treatments to be tailored rather than prescribed, a subtle but significant shift away from the one-size-fits-all approach often associated with luxury spa experiences.
Beyond the treatment rooms, the resort itself reinforces this sense of considered escape. Its 84 villas are set either along the shoreline or suspended above the lagoon and designed with space and quiet in mind, featuring high ceilings, natural materials and expansive views that blur the line between indoors and out. The Calm Spa Sanctuary, enveloped by tropical flora, feels less like a standalone facility and more like an extension of the island’s natural rhythm.

For travellers seeking a deeper immersion, JA Manafaru is also offering a “Stay 7 Nights, Pay for 5” package, encouraging guests to linger longer and engage more fully with the island’s slower pace. With added benefits such as complimentary seaplane transfers and dining savings, the offer underscores the resort’s broader ethos: that meaningful rest cannot be rushed.
In an increasingly crowded wellness landscape where trends often outpace tradition, JA Manafaru’s new programme stands apart by looking backwards as much as forwards. By inviting practitioners whose work is rooted in heritage and cultural knowledge, the resort offers something more enduring than a fleeting reset. It offers the possibility of genuine recalibration, shaped as much by place as by practice.
